OCF Mix 001: Matt Cash

Matt Cash is a man with a finger in many pies: the Florida native moved to New York several years ago, quickly finding himself an integral part of the DFA Records team (he still works as James Murphy's right-hand man) while also continuing his own personal DJ career and eventually shacking up with Williamsburg's infamous hardcore punk group, Violent Bullshit. We grabbed this excellent cosmic-leaning mix from Mr. Cash and sat down with him for a brief Q&A to figure out what he's all about and what makes him tick.

Introduce yourself―who are you and what do you do?

My name is Matt Cash. I am a lover of music and facilitator of cosmic vibes.

Where are you from originally? What brought you to NYC?

Originally, I am from Florida. I moved to NYC because I've wanted to be here since I found out it existed.

How did you get into DJ'ing to begin with? Any memorable stories from the early days?

I got into DJ'ing because I liked records. A lot. Around the age of 14 I started buying vinyl records. I really loved music and wanted a physical manifestation of that love, so I decided I needed a record collection. Around 16, my friends started having house parties and I would bring my records over and play them. Shortly after, the party moved to a bar down the street. Some people that were throwing bigger parties in Miami came to the bar, had a good time, and invited me down to play. I started playing a few nights a week not long after and eventually moved there.

I skipped the prom to do my Saturday night residency.

Outside of dance stuff, what have you been listening to as of late?

I like the radio a lot. The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling is the funniest thing I've ever heard. I also am really into Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service and Coast to Coast.

Are you working on any of your own material now? Both in terms of dance music as well as with your band? Also, tell me a bit about the group...

I play in a hardcore band called Violent Bullshit. It's a couple of old farts who are well-respected in the field and myself. We recorded an album and are releasing it ourselves soon. The vinyl will be extra pretty to make up for how brutal the music is. I also make my own edits for DJ'ing.

Finally, what are some non-music interests of yours?

People are very interesting to me. I am also really interested in the creative process in general and learning how to think in different ways, how to use your brain differently.
